You May Not Need a New Computer

If you are having problems with your computer, you may go to a computer store. Naturally, they will want to sell you new equipment. If they do service computers out-of-warranty, it will probably be time-consuming and expensive, and you have to lug your computer to them and back. Not an ideal solution.

It often makes sense to upgrade a part of your computer. But not always. It all depends on what you want to use your computer for. For example, monitors have improved greatly and gotten cheaper. You can see a lot more on a new monitor, and this is the simplest of upgrades.  Adding memory is also easy.

If you just want to do Internet browsing, e-mail, or simple word-processing, even a quite old computer will be fine. If you want to play the latest graphic-intensive games, on the other hand, you need a new, very high performance machine.

Free Advice:

Given the low price of new computers, some old computers are just not worth keeping.
A good rule of thumb is if it is 5 years old or more, then you are better off junking it.
Even if it is still working, hardware becomes less reliable after 5 years.

Human Health Issues

It is not only the health of your computers at stake. Computer use can affect human health. For example, it is a little known fact that incorrect video monitor settings can cause eye strain, headaches, and fatigue, without the user knowing anything is wrong.
Incorrect mouse settings can make it frustratingly difficult to use your mouse. This is very easy to fix.

Computers all too often cause stress, anger, frustration, and even a sense of inadequacy. This is sad and unnecessary. Your computer should be your tool, not a source of bad feelings.
